Suffering! Just the sound of the word makes me shiver! As common as suffering is, seasons of suffering are never welcomed with open arms. How can suffering be used for a good purpose when it hurts so much? What Does The Bible Say About Suffering?
1. Suffering is part of the journey, but in God we are able to find peace, hope, and comfort.
Suffering is a cross many believers have to carry in different seasons of life.
Matthew 10:38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. (NKJV)
Philippians 1:29 For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake. (NKJV)
The world suffers too. However, we have hope in the midst of suffering.
John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (NKJV)
2. Suffering is momentary, not eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, (NKJV)
2 Corinthians 4:18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. (NKJV)
3. Suffering can’t separate us from God’s love.
Romans 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (NKJV)
Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NKJV)
4. Jesus suffered in the flesh in order to accomplish his purpose on earth.
1 Peter 4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin. (NKJV)
Jesus sympathizes with our suffering.
Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. (NKJV)
5. God uses suffering to work on us.
Suffering produces patience.
James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. (NKJV)
When we suffer, God is able to mold us with more liberty.
1 Peter 5:10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. (NKJV)
Suffering teaches us obedience.
Hebrews 5:8 Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. (NKJV)
6. When we suffer, we get to know God better.
Suffering helps us understand the power, purpose, and sufferings of Jesus Christ.
Philippians 3:10 That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death. (NKJV)
Suffering helps us know and attend God’s Word with more devotion.
Psalm 119:71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes. (NKJV)
7. Through suffering we are able to experience God’s comfort & comfort others.
2 Corinthians 1:5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ. (NKJV)
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (NKJV)
8. God uses suffering to show His glory in us and through us.
Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. (NKJV)
Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. (NKJV)
9. God gives us hope in the midst of suffering.
2 Corinthians 4:8-10 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.” (NKJV)
Psalm 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. (NKJV)
Revelation 21:4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (NKJV)
Psalm 119:50 This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life. (NKJV)

How to deal with suffering
Take your pain to God through prayer.
Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. (NKJV)
Accept that God’s will is perfect.
Matthew 26:42 O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” (NKJV)
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. (NKJV)
Maintain a grateful and hopeful heart.
Psalm 69:29-30 But I am poor and sorrowful; Let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high. I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving. (NKJV)
Fill your heart with God’s WORD.
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (NKJV)
