What does the Bible say about doubt? Is it possible to believe in God but still have doubt? There’s a difference between believing in God and believing God. Believing in God is believing that He exists and that He is real. But believing God is believing his word to it’s entirety and believing that he will fulfill all of his promises in your life. As much as the word of God has advised us to have faith, believe, and put our entire trust in God, doubt can enter our lives discretely if we leave an open door. That’s why below we will be diving into scripture to understand what doubt is, how doubt manifests itself in the life of christians, the consequences of doubt, and how to overcome doubt.

What Does The Bible Say About Doubt?
What Is Doubt?
To have doubt is the equivalent to lacking conviction, being uncertain about something, and being in disbelief. Simply put, doubt is the opposite of faith.
When you have doubt, you become like a wave that can easily be tossed around depending on the wind. The presence of doubt can shake your life around.
James 1:6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. (NKJV)
How Does Doubt Manifest Itself?
When you have doubt, you NEED evidence to believe.
John 20:27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” (NKJV)
When you have doubt, you feel like you will fall.
Matthew 14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (NKJV)
When you have doubt, you limit God from working in your life.
Matthew 13:58 Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief. (NKJV)
The Consequences Of Doubt
Doubt allows Satan to remove God’s word from your heart.
Luke 8:12 Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. (NKJV)
Doubt prevents you from entering God’s rest.
Hebrews 3:18-19 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. (NKJV)
Doubt distances you from God.
Hebrews 3:12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God. (NKJV)
Doubt doesn’t let you appreciate what God has to offer.
Psalm 106:24 Then they despised the pleasant land; They did not believe His word. (NKJV)
You can’t please God and have doubt at the same time.
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (NKJV)
How To Overcome Doubt
Don’t lean on your own understanding.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding. (NKJV)
Ask God to increase you faith, just like the apostles and others did.
Lucas 17:5 And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” (NKJV)
Mark 9:24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (NKJV)
Cast the mountains of doubt into the sea and believe in God’s word.
Mark 11:23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. (NKJV)
Replace doubt with faith.
Matthew 21:21 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done. (NKJV)
Spend more time listening, studying, and reading God’s word.
Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (NKJV)
Let your conviction come from God not from men.
Matthew 16;17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. (NKJV)

What Else Does The Bible Say About Doubt?
We must pray without having doubt in our hearts.
1 Timothy 2:8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. (NKJV)
Why doubt in a God who never lies or fails to keep his promises?
Numbers 23: 19 “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? (NKJV)
Not even disbelief can change who God is or diminish his power. God is God.
Romans 3:3-4 For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written: “That You may be justified in Your words, and may overcome when You are judged.” (NKJV)
God remains faithful because that is who He is.
2 Timothy 2:13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself. (NKJV)
Doubt has consequences, but faith has a great reward.
Hebrews 10:35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. (NKJV)
Believing God produces hope.
Psalm 27:13 I would have lost heart, unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living. (NKJV)
