I believe in God not just because of what I’ve heard of Him growing up, but because of the way He has revealed Himself in my life over the years. God is God, but He is also many other things to me. If I were to list the many roles God has played in my life, this post would be 10,000 words long. But, with the hopes of expressing who God is to me while keeping it short and sweet, I’m only going to share 10 things God is to me. So, whether you’ve been following God for awhile or you just started following Him, in this post I’m sharing who God is in the life of Christians to help you understand the many roles of God, his character, and why life without Him just doesn’t make sense.

WHO GOD IS IN THE LIFE OF CHRISTIANS
1. A Loving Father
First and for most, God is a loving Father. The greatest Father figure you can ask for. The Father that will love you unconditionally and never forsake you. Yep, that’s God.
God actually wants you to be His child.
1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. (NKJV)
Regardless of your relationship with your parents, God is there for you.
Psalm 27:10 When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me. (NKJV)
God is the Father of the fatherless.
Psalm 68: 5 A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, Is God in His holy habitation. (NKJV)
EXAMPLE IN SCRIPTURE – The Prodigal Son
Luke 15:20 “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. (NKJV)
The story of the Prodigal Son demonstrates the essence of God as a loving Father. Even though the prodigal Son left home, wasted his fortune, made poor decisions, and let his entire family down, His father wanted nothing more than his return. God demonstrates this exact love and compassion towards us every single day – whether we act like grateful and loving children, or whether we fail Him and disappoint Him.
2. A True Friend
The most loyal, true, caring, sincere, and faithful friend you could dream of. God is the one person who you can go to at all times, with any problems, and walk away feeling strengthened, understood, and loved. There is no greater friend you could find.
God calls you His friend.
John 15:15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. (NKJV)
There is no greater friend than the one who gave His life for you.
John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. (NKJV)
EXAMPLE IN SCRIPTURE – Abraham
James 2:23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God.(NKJV)
Abraham was considered God’s friend because He walked with Him devotedly. Although Abraham developed a relationship with God at an older age, he was able to quickly form a strong friendship with God. Abraham trusted God, confided in Him, believed Him, and put everything in His hands (even the life of his Son).
God wants us to form a friendship with Him because a friend is someone you can trust, someone you open up to, and someone you feel comfortable with.
3. The Most Effective Healer
God is the only doctor capable of healing not just your body, but your mind and soul as well. There is no illness or disease more powerful than God. And He is willing and capable to work in the lives of those who invoke his name.
The Word of God can heal and save you from destruction.
Psalm 107:19-20 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses. He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. (NKJV)
God is the one who heals you.
Exodus 15: 26 And said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”(NKJV)
EXAMPLE IN SCRIPTURE – Miracles of Jesus
Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. (NKJV)
Jesus spent a good portion of His time on earth healing people from all kinds of diseases, demons, and oppressions. He is the ultimate healer. It’s impossible to just choose one miracle as an example because Jesus performed so many wonderful miracles. But, you can read all about the miracles of Jesus throughout the gospels.
4. A Provider
God not only heals, but He also provides. He is the most reliable and faithful provider. He provides what you need, he provides a way, and he provides abundantly.
Because everything belongs to God, it is from Him you must seek all things.
1 Chronicles 29:12 Both riches and honor come from You, and You reign over all.
In Your hand is power and might; In Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. (NKJV)
God supplies all needs.
Philippians 4:19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.(NKJV)
When you seek God’s kingdom first, everything else is added to your life.
Matthew 6: 31-33 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear? For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.(NKJV)
EXAMPLE IN SCRIPTURE – Feeding The Multitude
Mark 8:2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. (NKJV)
One of the most popular and incredible miracles performed by Jesus is when He fed the 4,000+ people that were hungry. In this miracle, Jesus demonstrated that He not only cared about preaching to them, healing their bodies, or comforting them, but HE also wanted to provide and sustain them. He revealed himself as a provider as well.
5. The Best Protector
My favorite place to run to when I’m in need of protection, direction, or comfort is God without a doubt. If God created the heavens and the earth, He is powerful enough to protect His people from any danger, thought, or situation that comes our way.
Put your fear aside and trust that God is ready to help you.
Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’(NKJV)
God is the one who defends you.
Psalm 5:11 But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name. (NKJV)
EXAMPLE IN SCRIPTURE – Pillar of Cloud + Fire
Exodus 13:21 And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.(NKJV)
One of the most clear ways that God has revealed Himself as a protector is when He went before the Israelites as a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire when they were crossing the red sea. The Israelites didn’t have any weapons or war strategies, but they did have a powerful God who shielded them, protected them, and guided them in their path to the Promised Land. God was a pillar of cloud during day time – moments of victory. And he was a pillar of fire during night time – moments of tribulation.
6. A Never Ending Light
Although we live in a world that is consumed by darkness, God has revealed himself to His people as light. So, who is God in the life of Christians? God is light. He is the light that shines bright and overcomes all darkness. We can find comfort knowing that no matter how dark it is outside, the light of God will always prevail.
God is light and there is no darkness in Him.
1 John 1:5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. (NKJV)
EXAMPLE IN SCRIPTURE – Blind Bartimaeus
Mark 10:46-52 So Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” The blind man said to Him, “Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road. (NKJV)
Bartimaeus had lost his identity, his vision, and his ability to move forward in Christ. He wasn’t known just as Bartimaeus, he was known as “Blind Bartimaeus”. His condition became part of who he was. When Jesus found Him, he was sitting on the road, blind, with no spiritual vision whatsover, and with an identity that didn’t belong to Him. But when Jesus revealed Himself to him as light, Bartimaeus was able to see again.
7. The Greatest Teacher
In the school of life, there is no better teacher to guide, correct, discipline, or teach us than God. He reveals Himself as the Shepherd that teaches his flock where to walk. Everything you need to know, learn, or understand, you’ll find this in God.
God teaches in the way he chooses.
Psalm 25:12 Who is the man that fears the Lord? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses. (NKJV)
God teaches you the way you should go.
Exodus 13:21 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. (NKJV)
God teaches you to profit.
Isaiah 48:17 Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go. (NKJV)
EXAMPLE IN SCRIPTURE – Jesus teaches.
Apart from healing and freeing people from oppression, Jesus spent a good portion of His time teaching. He not only taught with his words, but he taught with his example. Jesus taught with his own life. Which is why his teachings had impact on the lives of His disciples and followers. Jesus teaches us to follow His footsteps and walk like him.
John 8:2 Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them. (NKJV)
8. A Savior
When we were broken, God put us back together. When we were sick, God healed. And when we were lost, God saved, forgave, and redeemed us. There is no other savior that can demonstrate such love, mercy, and forgiveness the way God does.
There is no savior besides God.
Isaiah 43:11 I, even I, am the Lord, and besides Me there is no savior.(NKJV)
Salvation belongs to God.
Psalm 3:8 Salvation belongs to the Lord. Your blessing is upon Your people. (NKJV)
God has saved us through Jesus.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (NKJV)
EXAMPLE IN SCRIPTURE – Jesus forgives the adulterous woman.
John 8: 10-11 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” (NKJV)
After the adulterous woman was caught in the act of adultery, the scribes and pharisees brought her to Jesus so that she can be stoned to death. However, Jesus did not condemn her or accuse her like everyone else. Instead, he revealed himself to her as the Savior who wants to forgive her sins, cleanse her, and redeem her.
9. Rock Of Refuge And Comfort
Another way that God reveals himself to his people is as a rock of refuge and comfort. A rock where you can run to regardless of the situation you’re in or the way you feel. God is the rock that you can safely and confidently run to 24/7. He not only provides refuge (a safe place to rest in – his presence) but he also provides comfort.
You can only find true rest in God.
Matthew 11:28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.(NKJV)
God doesn’t give peace the way the world does.
Matthew 11:28 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.(NKJV)
God is the strong refuge where we can run to continually.
Psalm 71:3 Be my strong refuge, to which I may resort continually; You have given the commandment to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress.(NKJV)
EXAMPLE IN SCRIPTURE – David
Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.(NKJV)
Although David faced a lot of adversity, moments of darkness, danger, anxiety, and pain throughout his life, He always always always found comfort in God. And because David saw God as a rock of refuge and comfort, he had confidence that no matter what he faced in life, He would never be forsaken, alone, or destroyed.
10. The Definition Of Love
Last but not least, God is LOVE. And because He is love, he is also a friend, a father, a protector, a provider, a rock of refuge, a teacher, and so much more.
God is love.
1 John 4:8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.(NKJV)
Whoever abides in love, abides in God because God is love.
1 John 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.(NKJV)
EXAMPLE IN SCRIPTURE – God’s biggest demonstration of love.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.(NKJV)
The biggest demonstration of God’s love for his people is at the cross. He gave us everything through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. And because of that sacrifice we now have a Father, a true friend, a healer, a provider, a protector, light, a teacher, a savior, and a rock of refuge and comfort to run to.
