Is God really good? This is a question that I have heard so many times. In fact, I have asked myself this question a handful of times in the past, among other questions. If God is good, why did this happen to me? If God is good, why does he allow this to happen? Why is there so much suffering in the world? Why does hunger exist? Why do people die from terminal diseases? I mean, we can go on and on. But before we get to answering these questions later in this post, let me answer the opening question for you. Is God really good? Yes, God is so good. Although I had my doubts in the past, I can whole heartedly say now that God is good. Please let me explain why………

IS GOD REALLY GOOD?
God is Good, regardless of anything.
Many people doubt God’s goodness because they measure his goodness based on what men do. If God is good, why does suffering exist? Why do things such as: rape, murder, violence, hunger, wars, suicide, terminal, illnesses, accidents, and death exist?
How can a God that is so good allow all of this to happen?
It’s hard to understand, isn’t it?
It took me awhile to process, understand, and truly believe that God is good, even when things like murder, rape, illnesses, and pain exist.
Why do humans do evil & vile things?
God created us with free will. Instead of making us robots with no choice or say, God gave us the ability to make our own choices. However, every choice we make will either result in a blessing or a consequence, for ourselves and/or for others.
Philemon 1:8-9,14 Therefore, though I might be very bold in Christ to command you what is fitting, yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you….But without your consent I wanted to do nothing, that your good deed might not be by compulsion, as it were, but voluntary. (NKJV)
God wants us to use our freedom in Him for good, but the choice is up to us.
Galatians 5:13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. (NKJV)
No one is truly good but God. A human without God is unable to do good things.
Mark 10:18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. (NKJV)
People exchange the truth of God for the lies of the devil. When this happens, God steps aside (again, free will comes into play). God does not approve of evil, but He does not force anyone to follow Him, believe in Him, or walk in His truth.
Romans 1: 25-28 Who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting. (NKJV)
How do I know that God is good?
God’s goodness cannot be measured by what men do. God is God. What men do doesn’t define who God is or worst reflect his nature and heart.
Genesis 50:20 But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. (NKJV)
Why does God allow his children to suffer?
There are many stories in the Bible that are hard to grasp. For example:
- God asking Abraham to sacrifice his own son.
- God sending His ONLY son to carry our sins and die for us.
- Prophets and disciples being persecuted and executed for preaching the gospel.
- Women like Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Elizabeth, and Hannah who were barren.
- The blind man who was born blind.
- Paul, being incarcerated for preaching the gospel.
- The newborn Israelites boys who were killed by the Pharaoh of Egypt.
But scripture shows us that every suffering that the children of God endure serves a bigger purpose. Humans make others suffer for the sake of it. But when God allows us to suffer, he does it with a heavenly purpose. No suffering in God is ever in vain.
Suffering produces obedience.
Hebrews 5:8 Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. (NKJV)
We wouldn’t know what it feels like to be comforted by God if we’ve never suffered.
How can we experience healing from God if we’ve never been sick?
2 Corinthians 1:5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ. (NKJV)
When we suffer, we are able to sympathize with, understand, and comfort others.
How can we understand someone who is heartbroken if we’ve never experienced a heart break before?
2 Corinthians 1:4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (NKJV)
God uses suffering for His glory.
Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. (NKJV)
(Now there is so much more to say about why God allows suffering, but we will expand on this particular topic on another blog post. So keep your eyes peeled for that post.)
How can God still be good in the midst of pain?
God is still good because His nature never changes.
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (NKJV)
God’s mercy is everlasting.
Psalm 100:5 For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations. (NKJV)
What can I do when I don’t understand God’s goodness?
1 – Don’t question God’s goodness. If His Word says that He is good, simply believe it. You can be sure that God never lies, tricks his children, or breaks his promises.
2 – Try to replace your complaints with gratitude. Thank God for his goodness, even when your eyes only see suffering, pain, and adversity.
3 – Run to God, tell Him how you feel, and let Him convince you of His goodness.
Psalm 136:1 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! for His mercy endures forever. (NKJV)
