What Does The Bible Say About Gossip?
1. Gossip Is A Sin.
When the Bible talks about gossip, it’s not describing something playful, it’s describing a spiritually dangerous behavior that can harm both the speaker and the one spoken about.
Proverbs 16:28 – A perverse man sows strife, and a whisperer separates the best of friends. (NKJV)
Romans 1:29–30 – Being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents. (NKJV)
2. Gossip Is More Than Just “Talking About Someone”.
Gossip involves:
- Sharing information that isn’t yours to share (true or not).
- Speaking with the intent to harm a person’s reputation or spread distrust.
- Repeating rumors without seeking truth.
Proverbs 18:8 – The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, and they go down into the inmost body. (NKJV)
3. Gossip Reveals What’s In Our Hearts.
Gossip flows from:
- Pride – wanting to look better than someone else.
- Jealousy – resenting someone’s blessings or success.
- Insecurity – finding comfort in pointing out another’s flaws.
- Boredom – filling silence with “juicy talk” instead of meaningful conversation.
The issue isn’t only the words—it’s the heart posture that fuels them.
Luke 6:45 – A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. (NKJV)
4. Gossip Damages Relationships.
Even if the words aren’t true, they plant seeds of doubt in people’s minds. Gossip can be very destructive. It breeds division, damages leadership credibility, and creates an atmosphere of mistrust.
Proverbs 26:20 – “Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no talebearer, strife ceases.” (NKJV)
Proverbs 17:9 – “He who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates friends.” (NKJV)
5. God Calls Us to Use Our Words to Build, Not Destroy.
The opposite of gossip isn’t silence, it’s speaking life.
Ephesians 4:29 – Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. (NKJV)
Colossians 4:6 – Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. (NKJV)
6. There Is Power In Speaking Life.
Gossip tears down, but words rooted in love can heal and restore.
Proverbs 15:4 – “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.” (NKJV)
7. Resisting Gossip Takes Intentional Effort.
To guard ourselves from gossip, we must:
- Check our motives before speaking.
- Refuse to enter gossip circles.
- Redirect the conversation.
- Fill our hearts with God’s truth.
Matthew 12:36 – But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. (NKJV)
Matthew 12:37 – For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.(NKJV)
