If there is something I can take away from the recent trials I’ve endured it’s learning to be completely sincere and transparent with God. But what does being sincere with God look like? How can we be sincere with God at all times? In today’s post I’m going to open my heart and be as vulnerable as possible as I share how to be sincere with God according to my own experience.

How To Be Sincere With God
What Is Sincerity?
By definition, being sincere is expressing what you genuinely feel without hypocrisy.
Similar words to sincerity:
- Real
- Honest
- Profound
- Full-hearted
- Genuine
- Deep
- Truthful
- Genuine
In other words, to be sincere is to be genuine.
Why Is Being Sincere Important?
God values and regards sincerity very highly.
Psalm 51:6 Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. (NKJV)
Throughout scripture we see that God did not condemn those who were sincere about their faults, but instead, confronted those who were hypocrites and claimed to be “holy”. This is not only seen in the Old Testament, but in the New Testament as well. From all the groups of people Jesus encountered, He was the hardest with the Pharisees. Why? Because the Pharisees were not sincere with others, themselves, or even God.
They claimed to be what they weren’t.
They lived in complete denial.
And this kept them away from developing a genuine relationship with God.
Sincerity is important because it:
- Helps us recognize our faults, limitations, weaknesses, and dependency on God.
- Allows us to open our hearts to God and not hide anything from Him.
- Strengthens our relationship with God because what relationship survives on lies?
- Makes us more human and relatable with others.
What Does Being Sincere With God Look Like?
Being sincere with God is opening your entire heart before Him without hiding or omitting any feelings or words, no matter how embarrassed you are.
Proverbs 23:26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. (NKJV)
For me this year has taught me just that.
To open my heart to God and expose myself before Him just as I am. No masks, no excuses, no lies.
When I’ve been sad, I’ve shown him my sadness.
When I’ve been angry, I’ve expressed my anger.
Same with happiness.
When I’ve been happy, I’ve shared my happiness with God.
Years ago, I would only share my victories/happy moments with God and hope that He would only focus on that. But that didn’t allow me to build a sincere and genuine relationship with God.
Why? Because I was just showing him what I wanted him to see and omitting the rest.
We may get away with doing that with humans (sometimes), but God, who already knows our deepest and darkest thoughts, knows when we lie to Him. So, why omit the truth from the one who already knows everything about everyone?
3 Practical Ways To Be Sincere With God
1 – Talk to Him like you would talk to a very close friend, not the way you would talk to your boss. Don’t get me wrong, God is our boss, but he is also our best friend. So, talk to Him with that kind of trust. Share your happy moments, sad moments, and even embarrassing moments with him.
John 15:15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. (NKJV)
2 – Tell God exactly what’s on your mind without feeling shame. Because….He already knows what’s on your mind. But wants you to personally tell Him.
Psalm 139:1-4 O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. (NKJV)
For example, when I’m feeling frustrated, I tell God:
“God, I feel so angry right now. I am so angry….this is really bothering me. I’m sorry for feeling this way, but this is how I feel”
It may sound bad, but when I find so much peace expressing to God exactly what I feel.
Because He always finds a way to calm my soul, no matter how sad, angry, anxious, or crazy I am!
3 – Admit your weaknesses before Him. Instead of pretending everything is okay, show him what’s hurting you, what’s difficult for you, what’s bothering you, what’s confusing you, etc etc etc!
1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. (NKJV)
Examples Of Sincerity In The Bible
David
Psalm 51:3-4 For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight— that You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge. (NKJV)
Tax Collector
Luke 18:13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ (NKJV)
Elijah
1 King 19:4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!” (NKJV)
Paul
Romans 7:19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. (NKJV)
Jesus
Matthew 26:39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” (NKJV)
