Is it difficult to return to God after drifting apart? Honestly, yes. Not because of God, but because our own shame and sin make us feel like God’s forgiveness is out of reach. But is returning to God impossible? Absolutely not. As someone who has drifted away and returned to God quite a few times, I can say that it’s possible to return to God and be restored. If there is anyone that is more excited than you for your return it is God himself. So, what is stopping you from returning to Him? Below I am sharing how to return to God when you’re far!

How To Return To God When You’re Far
1. Know that God wants you to return.
You are not a lost case.
Jeremiah 18:4-6 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make. Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying: “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter?” says the Lord. “Look, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel! (NKJV)
And you most certainly aren’t forgotten by God.
Isaiah 49:15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you. (NKJV)
The God who formed you, brought you into this world, and has given you life is the same God who is able to forgive, cleanse, and restore you.
God longs for your return.
That’s why, no matter how far away you are or feel from God, there is always hope for your relationship to be restored with Him.
Deuteronomy 30:2-4 And you return to the Lord your God and obey His voice, according to all that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart and with all your soul, that the Lord your God will bring you back from captivity, and have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the nations where the Lord your God has scattered you. If any of you are driven out to the farthest parts under heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you. (NKJV)

2. Cleanse your mind from Satan’s accusations.
Satan will never want you to return to God, so he will use all his weapons to stop you. One of the weapons that Satan will use against you is the weapon of accusation. He’ll bombard your mind with accusations so that you feel ashamed, accused and condemned by God, just like Adam & Eve.
However, scripture tells us that God does not accuse anyone, instead, he leads us to repentance.
Romans 8:33-34 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. (NKJV)
God’s goal is to save not to condemn. We only condemn ourselves when we choose not to believe.
John 3:17-18 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (NKJV)
So, when Satan throws darts of fire (shame, accusation, guilt, condemnation) against you, fight him back with God’s truth.
2 Corinthians 10:4-6 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. (NKJV)

3. Open your heart to God again.
In order to restore a relationship, there needs to be communication. You can’t expect your relationship with God to be restored without opening your heart to Him. Adam and Eve made the mistake of hiding from God instead of opening their hearts to Him.
Shame makes us hide from God.
Communication draws us near God.
Psalm 145:18 The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth. (NKJV)
No matter how embarrassing it feels to talk to God again after disappointing, disobeying, and distancing yourself from Him, talk to Him again.
He will not reject you.
Instead, he will listen.
John 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. (NKJV)

4. Accept God’s forgiveness & forgive yourself.
There is no restoration without forgiveness.
After opening your heart to God with sincerity, ask Him for forgiveness and accept His forgiveness.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (NKJV)
Accepting God’s forgiveness means appreciating the gift of another opportunity and moving on from the past by leaving the past in the past.
Isaiah 43: 18-19 “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. (NKJV)
And if God can forgive you, why can’t you forgive yourself? In order to move on and enjoy God’s forgiveness, you need to genuinely forgive yourself the way that God has forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. (NKJV)

5. Renew your thoughts.
Lastly, renew your thoughts, not just once but daily.
Ephesians 4:22-24 That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. (NKJV)
You have to know that everyday is a battle.
The urge to distance yourself from God will come again and again. However, if you continuously renew your thoughts, you’ll be able to fight the urge and remain faithful to God.
What does renewing your thoughts look like?
- Praying to God for strength and boldness to remain faithful to Him.
- Seeking God’s presence to discover what His will is for your life.
- Changing your habits and distancing yourself from things that drift you away from God.
- Diving into scripture to learn more about God’s nature, understand God’s purpose for you, and acquire more knowledge of God.
Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (NKJV)
