Although we are saved by grace and not by works, the law of God is still very much relevant in our lives as children of God. We can’t profess to love God and willingly disregard or break his laws. James 2:26 says, “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” Which is why today I want to devote this post to studying the Ten Commandments! What are the Ten Commandments and what do they mean to us?

Relevancy Of The Ten Commandments
Before we get into studying what the Ten Commandments are, I want to talk about it’s relevancy! Like I said earlier, we are not saved by the law. We are saved by God’s grace. In other words, we are saved by Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Because we would never be able to fulfill the entire law, we needed a savior who would take our place, cleanse us from our sins, and free us from the punishment that entails breaking the law!
So, why are the Ten Commandments still relevant if we are saved by Jesus and not the commandments?
1. To truly know God means to keep His commandments (His Word).
1 John 2:3-5 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. (NKJV)
2. Jesus did not come into the world to break the law, but to fulfill it.
Matthew 5:17-18 Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. (NKJV)
3. The Ten Commandments are included in the Two Great Commandments in the New Testament.
Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (NKJV)
4. We can not take God’s grace in vain by disregarding His laws.
Hebrews 10:29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? (NKJV)
5. God did not save us so that we can continue to willingly practice sin.
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (NKJV)
What Are The Ten Commandments?
The Ten Commandments are listed in two parts of the Bible: Exodus 20: 2-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21

2. Do not create or worship idols.
In The Old Testament
Exodus 20:3-5 You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me. (NKJV)
In The New Testament

4. Keep God’s Rest Day – The Sabbath
In The Old Testament
Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who iswithin your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. (NKJV)
In The New Testament
Hebrews 4:8-10 For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. (NKJV)

In The New Testament
Ephesians 4:28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. (NKJV)
9. Do Not Lie (Be A False Witness)
In The Old Testament
Exodus 20:16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. (NKJV)
In The New Testament
Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of youspeak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. (NKJV)
10. Do Not Envy What Others Have
In The Old Testament
Exodus 20:17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s. (NKJV)
