Have you been facing a lot of battles lately? Do you feel like you’re constantly being attacked by the enemy? Although battles are a part of our daily life as Christians, God doesn’t want you to feel lost, insecure, or defeated when battling. He has created the perfect armor to help us stand firm during battles, defend ourselves from all attacks, and fight back like soldiers of God. In this post we’re going to dive into scripture and discover how to dress with the armor of God and what each piece of armor is for.

THE ARMOR OF GOD – SCRIPTURE
Ephesians 6:10-13
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (NKJV)
TAKEAWAYS
- The only way to stand strong and be firm as a Christian is to wear the entire armor of God, not one piece of armor but all.
- There are 6 essential spiritual pieces of armor all Christians need to wear.
- Our battles are not physical but spiritual.
- It’s possible to overcome spiritual battles, attacks from the devil, and all kind of evil when we’re dressed with the entire armor of God.
- Our entire being needs to be covered and equipped by God.
WHY IS THE ARMOR OF GOD IMPORTANT?
The armor of God is important because it is our ultimate protection against all attacks from the devil, darts of fire, and every situation that wants to destroy our faith in God.
The same way that soldiers put on their armor before entering a battle/war, as Christians, we must begin and end every day dressed with the armor of God.
Trying to face the devil, overcome attacks, and defeat our flesh without God is the equivalent to entering a war without any armor. An inevitable loss.
While God didn’t promise us a life free of battles, He did promise to:
- EQUIP US
Ephesians 6: 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (NKJV)
- FIGHT FOR US
Exodus 14:14 The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” (NKJV)
- GIVE US VICTORY
Romans 8: 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. (NKJV)
DEFEND + ATTACK
In a battlefield, you have to both defend yourself and attack in order to defeat your enemies. And that’s what exactly what the armor of God helps us do. The armor of God not only helps us defend ourselves, but the armor of God also helps us FIGHT BACK.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. (NKJV)
Our weapons in God are powerful enough to:
- Pull down strongholds
- Cast down arguments
- Bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ

SCRIPTURE
Ephesians 6:14-17 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (NKJV)
1. BELT OF TRUTH
First things first, our life needs to be firmly tied with the belt of truth.
Psalm 51:6 Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. (NKJV)
To gird means to secure something with a belt.
Think of skirts or pants, if they are loose on your waist, they are more than likely to fall off. A belt would help hold these clothing pieces together and on your body.
Our armor needs to be secured to our waist so that our armor is held together.
But what does the belt of truth represent?
JESUS.
Jesus is the belt of truth.
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (NKJV)
Jesus is the truth that holds our life together and maintains us firm during battles. To walk in God’s truth means to walk, move, and live our life in Christ.
John 8: 31-31 When Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (NKJV)
2. BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
The next piece of armor we must wear is the breastplate of righteousness.
Proverbs 21:21 He who follows righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor. (NKJV)
Breastplates are essential because breastplates are used to protect the heart and lungs, two vital organs in the human body. Similarly, the breastplate of righteousness helps us protect our spiritual organs so that we can survive on the battlefield.
When we practice righteousness, we:
- Protect ourselves from any darts, thoughts, situations, attacks, and words that can hurt our heart.
- Protect our spiritual lungs from any attack that wants to cause a spiritual death.
Here are two essential verses on righteousness:
Psalm 112: 6 Surely he will never be shaken; the righteous will be in everlasting remembrance. (NKJV)
1 Peter 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. (NKJV)
3. SHOES OF PEACE
The third piece of armor we need to wear is the shoes of peace.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (NKJV)
Equipping our feet with shoes is essential if we want to walk for long periods of time, walk on hard grounds, and walk with protection. Because our feet represent our thoughts, we must effectively protect our thoughts with the gospel of peace.
Isaiah 52:7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!” (NKJV)
The only way to maintain peace during difficult and rocky circumstances that want to dirty our feet (thoughts) is by allowing Jesus to guard our minds with his peace.
His peace has the capacity to guard our minds from any and all darts of fire.
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (NKJV)
Colossians 1:20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. (NKJV)
How do we wear the shoes of peace?
By giving God all of our thoughts, meditating on his truth, and allowing his peace to reign in our minds.
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. (NKJV)
4. SHIELD OF FAITH
The next piece of armor that we must be armed with is the shield of faith.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (NKJV)
The shield of faith is the piece of armor that helps us defend ourselves from direct attacks from the enemy. When he throws darts our way, we are able to shield ourselves, turn off darts, and continue to stand firm by using the shield of faith.
1 John 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. (NKJV)
Here are some faith bible verses that are a must-read:
- With faith we are able to walk firmly, even if we are in the middle of a battle.
2 Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. (NKJV)
- It is impossible to please God without faith.
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (NKJV)
- It’s possible to turn off darts of fire with faith.
Mark 9:23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” (NKJV)
5. HELMET OF SALVATION
The next piece of armor we need to wear is the helmet of salvation.
Titus 2:11-12 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age. (NKJV)
Helmets are necessary to protect our head when in battle. Because our head is a vulnerable yet essential part of our body, it has to be protected at all costs. God’s message of salvation is the only thing that can protect our mind from misleading information, fake doctrines, Satan’s lies, negative comments, and deadly thoughts.
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. (NKJV)
We must be rooted on the message of salvation in order to dismiss any thought that tries to frighten, discourage, harm, or hurt our minds.
Psalm 18: 35-36 You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; your right hand has held me up, your gentleness has made me great. You enlarged my path under me, so my feet did not slip. (NKJV)
6. SWORD OF THE SPIRIT
The last essential piece of armor we must possess is the sword of the spirit, which is God’s Word.
Revelation 1:16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. (NKJV)
Like I said earlier, in a battle you not only need to defend yourself but you need to attack as well to successfully defeat your enemies.
How can we attack the enemy when he his throwing darts of fire our way?
By fighting and replacing his lies with God’s truth.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (NKJV)
Why is God’s Word a must in the life of every Christian?
God’s word enlightens our thoughts.
Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (NKJV)
Darts come and go, but God’s Word prevails.
Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever. (NKJV)
Jesus is the Word.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (NKJV)
