Being sick is not pleasant in any way, shape, or form. It seems very pointless and destructive in the moment. I mean, who can genuinely say that they enjoy pain? No one. As someone who has faced sickness in various forms, I can assure you that it’s not easy to deal with pain, have your plans crumble before your eyes, or have to depend on others. None of it is easy. But, the one thing I can tell you is that facing illnesses with God is not the same as facing them alone. It’s not easy to remain hopeful, joyful, or even firm in your faith when sickness touches your door. However, spending time with God when you’re sick will help strengthen you during pain, remain hopeful, and see a glimpse of light in the midst of darkness. That’s why in this blog post I am sharing 3 ways to spend time with God when you’re sick.

3 Ways To Spend Time With God When You’re Sick
1. Work With What You Have
Something that has always overwhelmed me when I have gotten sick is not being able to do all of the things I usually do when I’m healthy. Whether it’s attending church, praying, singing at the top of my lungs, studying the Bible, etc. When you are sick, it’s hard to keep your flow going as if nothing was happening. It’s just not realistic. The more you try to do everything, the more overwhelmed you will feel. And that won’t be productive or helpful to your recovery. Something that you have to accept (as hard as it is) when you are sick is that you won’t be able to do everything, but you will always be able to do something to keep your relationship with God alive and strong.
“Go with the strength you have.”
A scripture that has really touched my heart during these days is Judges 6:14.
Gideon was going through a low point in his life; feeling helpless, useless, and without strength. But when God approached him, he did not tell him “get stronger so that I can use you and you can overcome this battle.” Instead He said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” (NKJV) God simply wants us to use the strength we have to attend his voice and face our battles. Even if it’s just a little. Gideon clearly didn’t have enough strength to face the Midianites.
But for God the amount of strength Gideon had was enough. Why? Because God doesn’t rely on our strength to work and do wonders. He relies only on His power.
There is always something you can do.
So, the next time you are feeling sick, do what you can with the strength you have.
If you can’t pray, read the Bible. If you can’t sing, listen to worship music. There will always be something you can do or a way to stay connected to God daily.
2. Keep Your Heart Connected To God
No matter how healthy or sick you are, you need to keep your heart connected to God. Because as long as your heart remains connected to God, your heart will remain hopeful and joyful, even in the midst of pain and discomfort.
Proverbs 17:22 says, “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.” So, keeping your heart in check is vital to your healing process.
7 ways to keep your heart connected to God:
- Meditate on scripture
- Recall the wonders God has previously done in your life
- Talk to God in your mind
- Think about God: his power and majesty
- Meditate on your favorite Bible Verses
- Remember God’s promises
- Meditate on different passages in the Bible you can relate with at the moment

3. Indulge In God-Related Content
Because what you consume (what you see and hear) affects the way you behave or react in a situation, it’s important to consume the right kind of content, especially when you are sick. If you surround yourself with negativity, chances are you will be consumed by fear, worry, and anxiety. However, if you surround yourself with positivity, you will look at the bright side of the illness, pain, or sickness you are currently facing.
That’s why it’s important to indulge in God-related content during this time.
I’m not saying to stop watching series, listening to music, reading books, or doing secular things. Because hello, if you can’t binge watch your favorite series when you are sick in bed, then when can you??? I’m all for it. But what I am saying is to make God a priority and to indulge as much God-related content as you can.
