What Is Bitterness?
The word bitterness itself sounds pretty bad, doesn’t it? No one likes to admit that they are bitter. We can admit to being upset, angry, frustrated, sad, etc. But bitter? Oh absolutely not.
Who’s bitter? Not me!
Does that sound like you?
As I was researching the definition of bitterness, I came across a couple of definitions that really put things into perspective. Here is a list of qualities, synonyms, and words that describe bitterness. Use this list to help you examine your heart and detect whether or not you are living life in bitterness .
Bitterness can look like:
- Lack of sweetness.
- Anger
- Disappointment of being tested unfairly
- Resentment
- Unhappiness
- Hatred
- Misery
Welcoming vs Fleeing from Bitterness
Whether you’ve felt disappointed in someone, anger towards someone, or some kind of unhappiness, your heart has been exposed to bitterness. Not that feeling angry or disappointed is wrong. Those feelings are completely natural.
Getting angry is not a sin.
Getting disappointed is not a sin.
But holding on to those emotions and letting them expand into more is giving place to the devil to plant bitterness in our hearts.
Ephesians 4:26-27 says, “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.” (NKJV)
So, it’s not the emotions itself that are dangerous, but what we do with those emotions after feeling them that can either welcome bitterness into our lives or guard ourselves from it.
